Discussion Title: SCIENCE AND GOVERNMENT: How are scientists responsible to society, and in control of their discoveries? Discussion Lead: Dr. William Lanouette, UC San Diego William Lanouette was a journalist in Washington (National Journal, The Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists) and later a Senior Analyst for energy and science issues at the US Government Accountability Office. His PhD thesis (London School of Economics) compared the use and abuse of scientific information by US and UK legislators. A specialist in the history of nuclear weapons and nuclear power, he is the author of Genius in the Shadows: A Biography of Leo Szilard, the Man Behind the Bomb.
