Oct 3, 2018–Oct 3, 2018 from 12:00pm–5:30pm
This free and open event to all UC San Diego students, staff, and faculty will provide a unique opportunity to meet with pioneering scientists involved in the development of some of the first technologies which we now know as Organ-on-a-Chip. In addition to facilitating this exceptional networking opportunity, the event will bring together technology developers, ethicists and policymakers to highlight the intersection of these fields when it comes to developing and evaluating alternatives to animal models. Collaboration between these fields will give graduate students an opportunity to consider alternative careers. STEM majors will see how their field can be applied in non-traditional ways, and non-STEM majors can see how their field may be applied to science. Agenda: 12:00 pm Lunch, Natural Sciences Building Lobby 12:45 pm TBD Janna Naworth, Ph.D., R&D Lead, Emulate Inc. 1:30 pm “Lessons learned – The transformation of academic concepts in organ-on-a-chip technology to commercial products” Holger Becker, Ph.D., CSO, Microfluidic ChipShop GmbH 2:15 pm Refreshments, NSB Lobby 2:30 pm “Bioprinting and microscale fabrication of miniaturized tissue models in-vitro, in-vivo and on-a-chip” Luiz Bertassoni, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Oregon Health and Science University 3:15 pm “Rapid 3D Bioprinting for Micro-physiological Systems” Shaochen Chen, Ph.D., Professor of Nanoengineering, UC San Diego 4:00 pm “Ethics, policy, and current state of Organ-on-a-Chip for reduction and replacement of animal models” – Panel 4:30 pm Dinner, NSB balcony
