Beyond Biobanking: Building Clinically Contextualized Human Biology Platforms for Precision Medicine

Precision medicine has generated unprecedented molecular and computational insight into human disease, yet many translational models remain constrained by limited integration of pathology, longitudinal clinical context, and globally diverse patient biology. As non-communicable diseases rise worldwide, there is increasing need for clinically contextualized human biology platforms capable of linking molecular signals with real-world disease phenotypes and treatment outcomes.

This interactive talk will discuss integrated translational research ecosystems combining clinically annotated biospecimens, pathology, longitudinal electronic health records, digital pathology, and patient-derived disease models to enable deeper understanding of oncology, kidney disease, inflammatory disorders, and other chronic diseases. Oncology examples will illustrate how pathology-linked human datasets and patient-derived tumor models can support companion diagnostics and theranostics, biomarker and target discovery, and clinically relevant therapeutic development.

The presentation will further explore how digital pathology is evolving toward AI/ML-enabled virtual pathology, creating new opportunities for computational interpretation of tissue biology and integration with multiomic and clinical datasets. Emerging non-animal models (NAMs), including patient-derived 2D/3D models, will be discussed to improve translational relevance. 

Dr. Jugnu Jain is the Co-Founder and CEO of Sapien Biosciences, Asia’s premier biobank established in 2012 with Apollo Hospitals to enable translational research and precision medicine to improve patient outcomes. She earned her PhD in Molecular Genetics from the University of Cambridge, UK, and conducted postdoctoral research at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School, where her work on NFAT and AP-1 signalling in cytokines was published in journals including Nature, Science, and later recognized as a “Pillars in Immunology” study. Before founding Sapien, she spent 16 years at Vertex Pharmaceuticals (Boston) leading drug discovery programs across oncology, inflammation, and serving as Vertex’s global lead for multiple sclerosis research.

At Sapien, Dr. Jain has built a premier, multi-speciality, national biobank of over 300,000 Apollo patients’ samples, tightly integrated with clinical, pathological, and diagnostic data, in full compliance with ethical and regulatory guidelines. Sapien is a unique platform that allows clinicians and researchers to translate routine patient care into impactful research, drug and biomarker discovery including ‘omics and digital pathology, and improved treatment strategies using real-world evidence. Dr. Jain has been honoured with the “Women Transforming India” Award by the NITI Aayog, Govt of India, for her pioneering work in healthcare innovation creating one of the top 10 biobanks in the world.
