Susan Shirk on How China’s Actions Derailed its Peaceful Rise

Susan Shirk on How China’s Actions Derailed its Peaceful Rise

For decades, China's rise to power was characterized by its reassurance that this rise would be peaceful. Then, after the Global Financial Crisis of 2008 and Xi Jinping took power in 2012, something changed.

In her illuminating new book “Overreach: How China Derailed Its Peaceful Rise,” Susan Shirk explains what happened by prying open the "black box" of China's political system and looks at what derailed its peaceful rise. Through extensive interviews and meticulous analysis, Shirk reveals the dynamics driving overreach. Combining her decades of research and experience, Shirk, one of the world's most respected experts on Chinese politics, argues that we are now fully embroiled in a new cold war. To counter it, she argues, the worst mistake the rest of the world, and the U. S. in particular, can make is to overreact.
