The People's Republic of China has significantly expanded its presence on global social media platforms over the past few years. China's premier social media outlet, CGTN, has hundreds of millions of followers on global social media platforms such as Facebook and Twitter. However, we have limited systematic understanding of how China is using these outlets to shape global public opinion. This talk, Jennifer Pan addresses this gap in knowledge by analyzing content produced by CGTN and comparing CGTN messaging against content produced by Western media outlets related to China in the same time period.
Speaker:
• Jennifer Pan, Associate Professor of Communication, Stanford University
• Victor Shih, Ho Miu Lam Chair in China and Pacific Relations & Associate Professor of Political Science, UC San Diego School of Global Policy and Strategy
