Feb 1, 2017–Feb 1, 2017 from 4:00pm–6:00pm
Join us for a lecture with special guest Dr. David Frankfurter of Boston University. This lecture explores the role of craftsmen and workshops in giving shape to Christianity in the fourth and later centuries CE. Arts, especially representational arts, carried a certain magic, or efficacy, whether in protecting places or directing supernatural powers. After looking at the various dimensions of this efficacy Frankfurter turns to textile weavers and mortuary specialists as particular areas for the integration of Christianity in Egypt. The lecture is drawn from Frankfurter’s book Christianizing Egypt: Syncretism and Local Worlds in Late Antiquity, forthcoming with Princeton University Press. Refreshments will be provided following the lecture. This event is hosted by the Center for Hellenic Studies at UC San Diego. RSVP ONLINE | DIRECTIONS
