Mar 5, 2019–Mar 5, 2019 from 5:00pm–6:30pm
Delve into the realms of predatory superbugs with infectious disease epidemiologist Steffanie Strathdee and her husband, psychologist Thomas Patterson during a discussion, followed by a Q&A and book signing to mark the release of their new book The Perfect Predator. This medical-mystery memoir tells the incredible story of Strathdee’s fight to save her husband’s life, which led her to rediscover a forgotten treatment for antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This unprecedented treatment saved Patterson’s life as well as several others and helped launch the Center for Innovative Phage Applications and Therapeutics(IPATH), the first phage therapy center in North America. Strathdee is the Associate Dean of Global Health Sciences and Harold Simon Chair at UC San Diego’s School of Medicine. She was named one of TIME magazine’s 50 Most Influential People in Health Care in 2018. Patterson is a Distinguished Professor of Psychiatry at UC San Diego. A book signing will follow the talk; copies of the book will be available for purchase from the UC San Diego Bookstore. This event is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be served.
