The Rhetoric and Application of AI in Policing & Criminal Justice

The Rhetoric and Application of AI in Policing & Criminal Justice

From facial recognition technologies to algorithmic sentencing guidelines to "predictive analytics," courts and law enforcement agencies around the world are spending large sums deploying advanced—and opaque—machine learning and artificial intelligence tools with little training, transparency or oversight. But beyond the actual systems, courts and law enforcement deploy the rhetoric of data science to justify criminal detention and police actions.

The Pacific Leadership Fellows program welcomes two distinguished experts on the law, civil rights and AI to discuss the opportunities that new technologies present in the criminal justice system while also highlighting the potential for unintended consequences, differential impact on communities of color and possible misuse and abuse.

Panelists:
• Alvaro M. Bedoya, Founding Director, Center on Privacy & Technology; and Visiting Professor of Law, Georgetown University Law Center
• Rashida Richardson, Visiting Scholar, Rutgers Law School; and Senior Fellow, German Marshall Fund
• R. Stuart Geiger, Assistant Professor, Department of Communication & Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute, UC San Diego (moderator)
