The William E. and Mary B. Ritter Memorial Fellowship Lecture

The William E. and Mary B. Ritter Memorial Fellowship Lecture

Join us for a free public lecture by Scripps Oceanography’s 2023 William E. and Mary B. Ritter Memorial Fellowship recipient, Danielle Inkpen from Mount Allison University.

Inkpen’s lecture, titled, “Capturing Glaciers: Thinking Historically About Icons of Global Warming,” will take place on May 10, 2023 at 3 p.m. at the Scripps Seaside Forum.

Lecture Description: Repeat photography is the practice of taking multiple photographs of the same subject, from the same location, at different points in time to provide visual evidence of nature and climate change. Photographs of receding glaciers captured through repeat photography have become effective in proving that global warming is happening, and it is happening now. In this presentation, Mount Allison University Assistant Professor Danielle Inkpen, an environmental historian of science, will delve into the history and use of repeat glacier photographs and show how they have become icons of global warming in recent years. The evidential significance of these images has shifted significantly over time, offering a window into the changing ways glacier scientists conceived their objects of study and the significance of their research. Understanding these echoes from history helps uncover historical assumptions and move toward just conceptions of global warming.
