In May of this year, Israeli military forces shot and killed the most celebrated Palestinian journalist working in the region, Shireen Abu Akleh.  During the first 9 months of the same year, 13 Mexican journalists have been murdered making 2022 the deadliest year ever for those working in Mexican media.  In both regions, perpetrators of these crimes have not faced justice and in both cases, powerful forces are using violence to suppress the telling of inconvenient truths that these journalists were committed to uncovering.  This suppression and even murder of journalists is occurring all over the world, from Saudi Arabia to Myanmar, from Syria to Nicaragua and beyond.  Sadly, the U.S. is far from innocent in this macabre use of violence against journalists as witnessed by its bombing in 2003 of Al Jazeera headquarters in Baghdad, driven by a hostile U.S. attitude toward truth-telling in the war. 
 

This event explores this worldwide phenomenon of violence against journalists by focusing on two cases – Palestine and Mexico.  The event aims to promote a far-reaching and free ranging exploration of the forces working to suppress truth-telling in these two regions and beyond while situating the issue within a larger problem of free expression and the right to free speech.
