UC San Diego Visual Arts Symposium and Open Studios

The UC San Diego Department of Visual Arts invites you to the Ph.D. Symposium and Open Studios on March 3 and 4, 2017. This display of graduate student scholarship and artistic practices is the Department’s largest annual public event. This year’s programming showcases the synergy and collaboration between M.F.A. and Ph.D. students in the Department of Visual Arts. The events will begin with a Ph.D. workshop at the University Art Gallery on Friday, March 3, 3:30 -–5:30 pm, and immediately followed by the opening reception for Making Communities: Art and the Border from 5:30 – 8:00 pm at the University Art Gallery. The evening will conclude with exhibition openings and screenings from 7:00 – 9:00 pm throughout the Visual Arts Facility with presentations from guest curators. On Saturday March 4, 9:00 – 4:00 pm enjoy a full day of art history scholarship beginning with Rethinking Art History: Center and Periphery, the 10th annual Ph.D. Symposium. The symposium will question how art historical research can engage with the contemporary world, and provide a platform for global and socio-political ideas that challenge the Western canon. The symposium will culminate with a keynote by UC Berkeley Assistant Professor of Global Modern Art, Anneka Lennssen titled Two Headed Passport: An Art History of Arab Mobility. From 4:00 – 7:00 pm, Saturday March 4 explore the diversity of practices from Visual Arts M.F.A. and Ph.D. Art Practice students.
