Sep 25, 2024–Sep 25, 2024 from 8:30am–9:30am
The value-added tax (VAT) has become a powerful tool for raising tax revenue in states that lack robust government infrastructure. Many countries rely on technology and automation to further strengthen self-enforcement and reduce the burden on tax officers. But when people are left to enforce the tax themselves, how does this affect compliance?
Join Tejaswi Velayudhan as she discusses experiments she and her co-authors performed in New Delhi, India, to see how taxpayers’ behavior changes when they feel that someone from the government is enforcing the laws.
Pablo Garriga will serve as an expert discussant providing his comments and feedback on the paper.
