The Inaudible Ocean is a collaboration between composer Lei Liang and oceanographer Joshua Jones that transforms otherwise inaudible marine mammal sounds into an immersive listening experience. Focusing on elusive deep-diving species like Baird’s, Stejneger’s, and Dall’s porpoises, the project reveals how these animals communicate through frequencies far beyond human hearing, ranging from infrasonic to ultrasonic levels—well outside the typical 20 Hz to 20 kHz range of human music. By transposing and slowing these signals, the work uncovers a rich acoustic landscape of echoes and textures, offering a new way to perceive the ocean. Blending science and art, the project uses technology as a “sonic searchlight” to illuminate hidden underwater worlds, culminating in a world premiere performance by Mark Dresser, Steven Schick, and Cory Smyth.
