Drop in to practice breaking down topics into categories and search terms, building effective search strings/queries, and identifying where to search for primary and secondary sources. You’ll leave with a clearer research question and a starter toolkit for finding your scholarly community.

This is a drop-in workshop (no registration required) and designed to guide you in acquiring/developing research skills necessary to move through different stages of the research cycle. Together, they also reflect the generosity of donors and support groups who helped build the collections and offer a glimpse into what made a book milestone-worthy at the time.

The Library’s story began several years earlier. In 1965, architect William L. Pereira was invited to design the Central University Library, envisioned as the flagship building for the UC San Diego campus. Construction began in 1968, and by September 1971, the new Central University Library was dedicated. Over the decades, the building has continued to evolve through expansions and renovations, adapting to the changing needs of the campus community.

Tracing the history of the Library’s site design process, construction and expansion from 1965 to 1993, Shaping a Library draws on unique materials from UC San Diego Library’s Special Collections & Archives. From Pereira’s original spherical concept for Geisel Library to Gunnar Birkerts’ glass-walled expansion, architectural drawings, photographs and documents reveal the ideas, people and processes that shaped this beloved campus landmark.

Check out examples from the Alice Notley Artworks collection, like Alone - I Pour a Cup or Vacuum.

This session will break down what open data actually is, highlight the best topic-specific data sources across disciplines, and explore sources for geospatial (GIS) data. You’ll also learn how to share your own datasets so your work gets recognized and cited. Finally, you'll put your new skills to work in a quick, guided hands-on exercise. No prior data experience required!

Workshop Instructors: Amy Work, Stephanie Labou and Reid Otsuji

Due to the Library-licensed resources discussed in the session, attendance is limited to UC San Diego affiliates. Registration is not required, but seating is limited to 34 attendees on a first-come, first-served basis.
